This document details how to create shortcuts to insert international characters into Microsoft Word documents in Word for Windows 2003, 2007, and 2010 as well as Word for Mac 2008 and 2011

Windows

In Microsoft Word 2003, select Insert --> Symbol, select the desired symbol, and click Insert.

In Microsoft Word 2007 and 2010, select Insert --> Symbol --> More Symbols, select the desired symbol, and click Insert.

Now, look at the bottom of the dialog box. In most cases Word will already have a shortcut keystroke assigned to the character you want to use. Make note of it, and you can just use that shortcut in the future. If the character does not have a shortcut key assigned, or if you want to change the existing shortcut, just click the Shortcut Key button. In the 'Customize Keyboard' dialog box, press the shortcut key combination you want to use and then look below the text box to see whether it is already assigned to another function. If it is, try another combination.

Note: You can use multiple keystrokes modified by the Ctrl or Alt keys to create your shortcut. For example you can assign Ctrl-O or Alt-O or Ctrl-Alt-O to insert different symbols.

Mac OS X

In Microsoft Word 2008, select Insert --> Symbol , select the desired symbol, and click Insert.

In Microsoft Word 2011, select Insert --> Symbol --> Symbol Browser , place your cursor in correct location within the Word document, and select the desired symbol to insert it.

Note: In Microsoft Office 2011, use the dropdown menu to view all symbols or a specific type of symbol.

Type accented characters

Press and hold a key until its alternate characters appear, then click or type the number under the character that you want to use.

If no additional characters are available for the key that you're holding, the accent menu doesn't appear.

If you decide that you don't want to type an accented character after holding a key, press the Esc (escape) key.

Repeat a character

Some keys repeat when you press and hold them, depending on where you type them. Press and hold the Space bar or symbol keys (like hyphen or equals) to make these characters repeat in most apps. In apps where accented characters aren't used (like Calculator, Grapher, or Terminal), letter and number keys also repeat when you press and hold them.

If a character isn't repeating, check your Key Repeat settings:

  1. Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences.
  2. Click Keyboard.
  3. Make sure that the Key Repeat slider isn't set to Off.

If a key isn't designed to repeat in the app you’re using, follow these steps:

  1. Select the character that you want to copy.
  2. Press Command-C to copy the character to the clipboard.
  3. Hold Command-V to paste the character repeatedly.
